                  SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC FEED IN TARIFFS

from April 2010

Feed-in Tariffs - the highlights

The Feed In Tariffs are paid on the electricity generated by a specific renewable energy system, but there is and additional payment for 'exported' electricity. So you get a larger payment for energy you dont use and therefore 'export' to the grid than for energy you produce and use on site.

When there is a shortfall from your renewable energy system (at night for a solar PV system and during high pressure with no wind for a wind turbine system) you will make up the shortfall by 'importing' electricity from the grid. You will pay your electricity company in the normal way for this 'imported' electricity.

The Feed-in Tariff has two elements:

  • A 'generation' tariff based on the Total generation (Kwh) and the energy type (see table below)

  • An 'export' tariff for any energy Exports when generating more than you need

Though you pay for energy Imports in the usual way:

- you will save on the bills for all electricity you use that comes from your renewable energy system.

-----------

The EXPORT TARIFF level is set by the government (and is currently proposal at 5p/kWhr), though independent generators may be able  to negotiate a better rate with their supplier. This 5p/kWhr 'export rate' will be the same whatever type of renewable energy is used.

The FITS will be paid for 20 years for most systems (though 25 years for Solar PV)

Who pays whom?

The electricity supplier pays the Feed-in Tariffs (and bills the users for the electricity imported in the normal way). Suppliers may choose to 'net these amounts off' and just pay a cheque or submit a bill for the difference.

When are payments made?

Generally they should be quarterly to coincide with electricity bills

How is the electricity measured?

Meters will be needed to measure each of the three energy flows (generation, import and export). You will already have an import meter, and the others may be similar - though the whole country is changing over to Smart Meters in the next few years, and they will be able to cope with all this
